Sophie Gombya will resign from her position as Uganda Musicians Association (UMA) president effective July 31, 2020.
Sophie who was elected in June 2019, decided to step aside to concentrate on politics.
According to a letter cited by this website, Sophie Gombya reasoned that she took the decision to contest for the Woman Councilorship in Kampala Capital City Authority (LC 5 Woman Councilor KCCA) which the association’s constitution doesn’t permit.
The association’s constitution doesn’t permit us to practice politics, and I have decided to run for Woman Councilorship in Kampala Capital City Authority (LC5 Woman Councilor KCCA)
Sophie Gombya
She intends to run for Lord Woman Councilor, Kampala Central in the forthcoming elections .
Her Deputy, Ykee Benda will take over office as acting President of UMA, awaiting elections to get a new leader of the Association.
UMA was established in 2019 after Ugandan artistes detached themselves from the Uganda Performers Rights Society (UPRS) due to unsatisfactory results from the body, which had promised to help generate revenue from their music and help them monetise their craft.
